At 6:30am we will pick you up at your place of stay and head off to Thapae Gate, the east gate of the old city wall. We will start the tour by jogging or walking to the Kad Somphet local market where you will learn about the various kinds of nourishing vegetables and herbs used in Thai cooking. While visiting, soy bean drinks and shakes will be served for breakfast. Your journey continues as you visit several Wats (Buddhist temples).
Your first stop will be Wat Chiang Mun, once the home of King Meangrai, the founder of Chiang Mai. The temple was built in A.D.1279 and it is now the home of the crystal Buddha image. We later go to the Three Kings Monument in the center of the old city. The monument consists of the statues of King Mengrai and his two closest friends, Khun Ramkamheang who was the king of Sukhothai and Khun Ngummuang who was the king of Phrayao.
We then continue on to Wat Pan Tao to see its Vihan, or chapel, which is constructed of teak wood. It is only the temple in the north built in this fashion. Next we will visit Wat Chedi Luang (Built in A.D. 1411) to see the North’s highest Buddhist Pagoda, once the home of the famous Emerald Buddha image, the most revered Buddha image inside the Vihan and also the biggest in the north. You will also see the beautiful mythical Nagas (Serpent) steps that surround the Pagoda.
After this it’s off to Wat Phra Sing (Built in A.D. 1345) to see the 500 year old Buddha image, called Phra Buudha Sihing and the 200 year old exquisite wall paintings. Then we will head off by a car to experience the bustling shopping center at Kad Luang, the oldest and largest market of Chiang Mai. There are various kinds of the delicious local food throughout, such as, pork sausages, fried pork skins, chili paste sauces, and sweets and snacks.
The shopping center is a favorite for food lovers, specially the tourists from Bangkok. Your tour will end at a local restaurant where you will be served a lunch of traditional Khao Soy Noodles, which are a local food of Chiang Mai. At 11:30am transportation will be provided for your return to your accommodations.
